About John Chi, MD, MPHS

Dr. John Chi is a board-certified, fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeon in St. Louis with a clinical practice focused only on the aesthetics and function of the face, head and neck. Dr. Chi is truly passionate about helping his patients achieve their best possible outcomes through a patient-centered approach.  Dr. Chi is an award-winning facial plastic surgeon and has been recognized by the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery as a leader in the field of facial plastic surgery.  Dr. Chi’s humanitarian work has taken him to China, Ecuador and Guatemala to care for medically underserved cleft lip and palate patients.

Dr. Chi offers patients a broad range of treatment options for problems, including facial aging, nasal breathing, facial reconstruction and facial paralysis.

After years of medical training and work as an educator, Dr. Chi says, “Listening to the patients and hearing each individual’s questions and concerns is an invaluable part of choosing the surgery or treatment that will achieve the best possible outcome. You can’t possibly begin to treat the problems of the patient until you hear the concerns of the person.”

Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Columbia University, Dr. Chi pursued his love of teaching and became a science teacher in an underserved community in the South Bronx in New York City. While working in the classroom as a teacher, he earned his master’s degree in Secondary Science Education from the City College of New York. He went on to graduate magna cum laude from the State University of New York – Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, NY and completed residency in otolaryngology – head & neck surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.

In his current position as Associate Professor of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine, he continues to teach medical students, residents, and fellows. He is co-director of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Washington University. He also serves on the Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Education and Humanitarian Efforts committees with the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. His research interests include facial reconstruction, facial paralysis, and quality of life following facial plastic surgery.
